Delivery Zone Selection
How are Delivery Zones Selected?
Delivery zone selection determines which delivery zone applies when a customer enters a delivery address at checkout. When multiple zones could apply to the same address, the system uses specific ranking rules to choose the best match.
Understanding how zones are selected helps you configure your delivery zones effectively and troubleshoot unexpected delivery fees or availability issues.
Zone selection criteria
Zones are ranked based on type and price. The system chooses the lowest-cost applicable zone to avoid overlaps.
- Type ranking: Custom Zone > Distance > Radius > Postal Code
- Price ranking: Lowest fee first
When zones of the same type overlap, the system selects the zone with the lowest delivery fee to minimize cost for the customer.
Example:
If two radius zones overlap:
- Zone M: 0–5 miles, $40 delivery fee
- Zone B: 0–3 miles, $20 delivery fee
For an address 2 miles away, the system will select **Zone B** ($20) to minimize the customer's cost.
FAQs
Can I override the automatic zone selection?
No. Zone selection is automated based on the ranking rules. To guarantee a specific zone applies, use a Custom Zone (highest priority) or adjust your zone boundaries and pricing.
What if I want a more expensive zone to apply?
The system always selects the lowest-cost zone of the same type. To force a higher-cost zone, you must either:
- Remove or disable the lower-cost zone
- Change the zone type (Custom Zones have highest priority)
- Adjust zone boundaries so they don't overlap
How do exclusion areas affect zone selection?
Exclusion areas remove specific addresses from a zone. If an address falls in an exclusion, that zone won't be considered during selection, and the system moves to the next eligible zone.
